The Food and Beverage Industry

The highest labor to lowest capital industry on the GlobalEdge industry profile site, the food and beverage industry is extremely competitive, involving not only the processing and packaging, but the distribution of processed foods and beverages (Food and Beverage: Background, 2013). As Americans, we have taken the availability and convenience of canned food as granted for decades. In many parts of the world, this is not as true. For example, in countries that were formerly part of the Soviet Union, home canning is still quite common. The lack of availability of many of the processed, canned food items forces this reality. But that is changing, in an article today from Fresh Plaza, a global, electronic news service for the fresh produce industry, the Ukrainian region is seeing a profound change. The Ukraine currently has a 50/50 ratio of purchased canned food items vs. home canned. Production and distribution has improved in the region, increasing per capita consumption up to over 18 pounds per year (Russia: Canned Demand, 2013). In 2012, the region experienced a growth of almost 20% over the prior year, and the 2013 year to date shows an increase in demand of over 200% compared to last years to date figures. This simply points out that opportunities are everywhere in the world within this industry, if one takes the time to investigate and explore.

As Americans, there are many that take a very narrow view of the rest of the world. Whether it is due to lack of awareness, experience, or interest, many people have a very ethnocentric view of things. America is a great country, but let us not become arrogant in our thinking. Many countries around the world have very highly developed food and beverage (F&B) industries, while others are emerging. Colombia, in South America, is considered an emerging country, and their F&B industry is as well. A recent (3rd quarter, 2013) report on this industry highlights some interesting points. Overall consumer consumption is expected to increase around 8% per annum through 2017. Retail grocery sales expected to increase almost 9% per year through the same period. There are number of trends that may positively impact the F&B industry in Colombia as well, such as a fungus on the coffee plants in Central America, increasing the demand for Colombian coffee. A newcomer to the retail industry in Colombia is Jeronimo, a Portuguese chain that has recently opened its first 5 grocery stores in Colombia and have been well received (Business Monitor International, 2013).

In conclusion, the F&B industry is a global industry, and also a local business. The farmer with a small fruit stand, as well as Coca-Cola™, are in the same industry. On a necessity scale, people have to eat, and this industry will continue to grow, innovate, and prosper around the world. May God Bless you all in your endeavors.
